Daniel G. Benes ~ Antique Science & Technology Exhibit!
Demonstrations of Science, Physics, Chemistry, & Electricity.
Live Antique Science & Technology Exhibits as Thomas Alva Edison.
An amateur scientific historian and Maker savant, Daniel G. Benes has been called a “modern Thomas Edison” so many times he finally turned into one! Daniel is a passionate collector of antique scientific, radio, electrical, and medical devices. Some of his collection has been on display in museums, including an Edison museum in Chicago. He has designed and hosted numerous youth camps and classes. He performed the lead role as Thomas Alva Edison in the 2012 stage-play, “Showdown at Unobtainium” (opposite Nikola Tesla). His antique science and technology exhibits, fun with physics classes, and live science presentations as Thomas Alva Edison have been featured at (and sponsored by) Austin Mini Maker Faire, SXSW Interactive Create, IQuest Austin, Austin Tinkering School, Lake Travis STEM Academy, Austin Public Library, Weird West Fest in Giddings, and at numerous public and private schools, churches, and museums. He has appeared on KOOP Radio (Austin), in Texas Monthly, the New York Times, and on KVUE TV. Look for Daniel at his Antique Science & Technology Exhibit May 16-17 at the 2015 Austin Mini Maker Faire, and as a guest speaker on the speaker stage.
Daniel is a science and technology instructor at IQuest Global Enrichment Center in Austin (K–12), and a member of W.A.T.T. (World Association of Technology Teachers). His camps and classes have included IQuest Austin’s 2014 International Space Station (ISS) Mission Control Space Camp, and Survivor IQuest; a children’s outdoor wilderness/Bushcraft survival skills camp, as well as a children’s Science & Physics camp in 2014 at the Lee County Youth Center, sponsored by Giddings Chamber of Commerce.
Daniel is also an award-winning World music composer and contemporary Native American Flute/World Flute recording artist and performer. It is his music that plays throughout St. David’s Hospital in Georgetown every time a baby is born. He is a school-trained audio, MIDI, recording, and mix engineer, and an award-winning (published) photographer. He has worked as an aerospace/avionics technician, and is a former two-time Austin radio show host and producer (KNLE (in the 1990’s), and KFMK “Spirit 105.9” (in 2011-12)). Daniel has produced and mixed live radio performances and interviews for Michael W. Smith, Amy Grant, MercyMe, Third Day, Randy Phillips (Phillips, Craig and Dean), Brit Nicole, Chet Garner (PBS’s Daytripper), and more.
Besides science and music, Daniel is a primitive survival/bushcraft skills aficionado and instructor, and has competed in the Archeolympics Primitive Skills Competition sponsored by Texas Parks & Wildlife. It’s been said that if you were to lay Daniel’s interests and experiences end-to-end, they would equal more years than he’s been alive. And THAT’S something only science can explain! ~
