Feto Soap

Learn to make your own bars of soap using a glycerin base that you can easily melt and pour. This project can be completed in a matter of minutes. Participants choose the color, fragrance & toy for their soap, and pour it into a soap mold where it needs to set. After they have set they are ready to use! Each person will go home with a completed soap, instruction sheet and reusable soap mold for future soapy projects. This is an easy, fun & creative project that is great for kids!

Making a Race for Everyone

“If you get a medal, will you wear it to school on Monday so I can see it?” Inspired by their teacher’s first experience of running a half marathon here in Austin (and, yes, getting a medal for crossing the finish line!), the children at Tigerlily Preschool decide they will have their own race. With their own medals. And a red ribbon at the finish line. What kind of race will be a good-feeling race where everybody can win? This project shares these four-year-olds’  undertaking of their Race for Everyone as told through photo images and the children’s own words, illustrations, stories, sculptures, and constructions.

Interactive component: Tell the children what you think about their race! Viewers of all ages are invited to share their thoughts about the children’s project in a community notebook to be compiled at the Faire and then shared with these young Makers back at school.

Then, make your own medal to celebrate your own wonderful something! We’ll have an assortment of open-ended materials to create with.

Austin Area Homeschoolers Science Team

Austin Area Homeschoolers Science Team is making a name for itself among the large middle- and high-school science teams. One of the AAH science teams finished in second place for Science Bowl – one spot away from progressing to national competition! Last year the AAH high school team won our regional Science Olympiad competition and performed in the top five statewide in several events.

The high school AAH science team is completely run by the students, who make the travel arrangements, enter the competitions, and organize their competitions and events. For the middle school team, parents serve as mentors and coaches for all events.

A central goal of the team is to build a greater interest in science and to make it a fun and social activity. Membership on the team also allows students to practice public speaking and to use the competitions to learn about teamwork and sportsmanship. While the team’s activities provide some great science education opportunities, the team is not a substitute for a science curriculum or home-directed study.
